Celebrate the season with these adorable mug huggers, the perfect companions to all your favorite warm drinks!

 

INGREDIENTS

6 cups all-purpose flour (plus additional, for dusting work surface)

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

3 teaspoons ground ginger

4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed

2 large eggs

1 cup dark molasses

1 tablespoon water

 

Royal Icing (see recipe, included) 

Assorted candies, gumdrops, colored sprinkles, sugars, for decorating

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 6 cups flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and salt. Set aside.
  • In second large bowl with electric stand or hand mixer on medium, combine butter and brown sugar, beating until fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs, one at a time; add molasses, and water, mixing until combined.
  • With mixer on low, slowly add dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until thoroughly combined.
  • Knead the dough a few times.
  • Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate until well chilled. 
  • Position oven rack in middle of oven. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  • Remove 1/2 of dough from refrigerator; allow to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before using.
  • Dust workspace and rolling pin with flour.
  • Roll out first half of chilled dough to 1/4 inch thick.
  • Dip cookie cutters in flour and cut out shapes. Place 2 inches apart on parchment lined baking sheet. 
  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Using oven mitt, remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring cookies to cooling rack.
  • Repeat with second half of dough.
  • Once cookies are cooled completely, decorate mug huggers using Royal Icing (see recipe, included). 

 

 

Royal Icing

 

Make immediately before decorating mug hugger cookies Work quickly, as icing begins to set in just a few minutes. Allow decorated cookies to sit for about 5 minutes before finishing them with decorative colored candies, sprinkles and sugars.

 

INGREDIENTS

3 tablespoons meringue powder

1 lb. box confectioners’ sugar

6 tablespoons water 

1 tablespoon clear vanilla extract 

 

Colored sugar crystals, colored candies, sprinkles, gumdrops, for decorating

 

TOOLS

Electric stand or hand mixer   

Measuring cups

Measuring spoons

Frosting bags, couplers and tips

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Using electric mixer, beat all ingredients in mixing bowl for 8 to 11 minutes on medium speed until icing is firm. To adjust consistency, add more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time.
  • Place icing into a frosting bag fitted with frosting tip and begin decorating!
  • Allow decorated cookies to sit for five minutes before finishing with colored candies and decorating sugars, if desired. Let fully decorated cookies set completely before serving,

ASSEMBLING THE 3D GINGERBREAD HOUSE MUG HUGGER

 

 

For each finished 3D house mug hugger, begin by baking and decorating the house cookie shapes using Festive Gingerbread Mug Hugger Cookies (see recipe, included) and Royal Icing (see recipe, included).  Allow decorated cookies to set completely.

 

When ready to assemble the house, prepare additional Royal Icing and fill a frosting bag fitted with a frosting tip. Gather these cookie shapes:

 

(2) “A” shapes = front & back of house

(2) “B” shapes = sides of house (turn so that short side points up toward roof)

(2) “C” shapes = roof pieces of house (turn so that long side runs front to back of house)

 

START WITH THE WALLS: Hold one “A” cookie piece and pipe a thick line of Royal Icing on one side. Place one “B” cookie piece, short side pointing up, against the iced edge, holding the two together for about two minutes, until the icing sets. Repeat with the remaining “A” and remaining “B” pieces, until all four walls come together. Allow structure to set for 30 to 60 minutes before adding the roof. 

 

 

 

 

 

ADD THE ROOF: Pipe a thick line of Royal Icing along the top edges of the four house sides. Take one of the “C” roof pieces and press it (long side pointing front/back of house) against the iced edges, holding for about two minutes until it sets. Repeat to add the other “C” roof side. Fill in some icing to the connecting area where the roof pieces meet. Allow to set, about 30 to 60 minutes.

 

DECK THE HALLS

Use additional Royal Icing as “glue” to top house with assorted colored candies, gumdrops, sprinkles and colored sugars, if desired. Let finished mug hugger set completely before serving.
